Oman,United Arab Emirates : OPWP likely to finalise agreements for power trading via GCCIA
Publish Date : 04-May-2016
Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP) would likely finalise the deals for power trading through the GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) and execute one trade this year.
OPWP seeks to take part in pilot electricity trading activities with another GCCIA member state for testing and establishment of the necessary arrangements for firm capacity transactions.
OPWP said, This would create an alternative option for short-term contingent capacity, for which OPWP has previously procured rental diesel generators when required.
Additional plan includes establishment of the contribution of the GCCIA interconnection benefits to requirements for operating reserves as well as generation adequacy, along with Oman Electricity Transmission Co (OETC) and Authority for Electricity Regulations (AER).
In December 2014, Oman had joined the GCCIA, facilitating access to the power systems of other member states through the UAE interconnect. In 2011, a 220kV interconnection between the Oman (MIS) and UAE (Abu Dhabi) power systems was commissioned and has been commercially operational since May 2012.
