The National Company Romtehnica of Romania has secured nine bids from global firms for its project to modernize frigates that it procured long ago.
Romania has planned the modernization program for the 30-year old frigates, King Ferdinand and Queen Maria.
The frigates were made in 1986, while Romania became the owner of the same in 2003.
The estimated value of the frigate modernization contract, exclusive of VAT, stands at RON 838.7 million (EUR 186 million) for a 42-month period.
The Romanian Government in 2015 announced its decision to expand its budget for the defense sector, with allocation for the naval forces as well.
Since last December, companies across the globe have been offering their bids for the frigate modernization project.
Bids have been offered by Terma A/S (Denmark), DCNS Rcs (France), Thales Nederland BV (The Netherlands), BAE Systems Surface Ships Limited (The UK), Finnmeccanica SPA (Italy), Lockheed Martin Canada Inc (Canada), SAAB AB Electronic Defense Systems (Sweden), and Israel Aerospace Industries (Israel).
