Sri Lanka : CEB plans a 50MW Power Base to meet emergency power demands

Publish Date : 17-May-2016

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced a strategy to develop its own power plant with 50MW of capacity to deal with power crisis situations in the country.

Interacting with media, the Board Chairman Anura Wijayapala has disclosed that they will float global tender in a while to set up the power base.

The CEB Chairman has further said that the Board has planned to finish all required jobs so that it can launch this project by this October or November.

Wijayapala has also revealed that the Board is mulling over a price of Rs. 25 to Rs. 30 per unit.

The CEB Chief has also disclosed that the power unit, which will be a mobile one, is mainly intended for fulfilling the needs of hospitals and meeting other urgent requirements across the island nation, stressing on the necessity of such plants in Polonnaruwa among other similar areas in Sri Lanka.

The CEB management was forced to go for this plan after it faced rejection twice on its bid to procure emergency power from the countrys Power Sector regulator, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).

Earlier the Commission had directed the CEB to refrain from procurement of emergency power, as the catchments were having rain and the national grids receipt of 900MW of energy from the coal fueled plant in Norochcholai.

Consequently, the CEB decided to abandon all bidding relating to the latest offer for emergency power purchase.
