France,India : Defence Minister commissioned the 2nd submarine assembly workshop of MDL
Publish Date : 01-Jun-2016
Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on last Saturday has accomplished the inauguration of the second submarine assembly workshop of the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL).
It has been constructed with an investment of INR 153 crore.
Speaking after the launch, Mr. Parrikar has stressed that the country must up its level of indigenization in the submarine construction space from the current level.
MDL is now involved in the construction of half-a-dozen Scorpene class of submarines for the Indian Navy, with indigenization level of approximately 35%.
In partnership with French firm DCNS, MDL is now carrying out the construction of this submarine class in its East Yard.
It is anticipated that the first Scorpene class submarine INS Kalvari will join the fleet of the Indian naval forces by late this year.
The Submarine Marine Assembly Workshop is a pre-engineered building structure to manage simultaneous construction of several submarines.
The newly inaugurated workshop is capable of assembling five submarines simultaneously.
With this facility, MDL will be able to step in for a second line of submarines at the same time.
The company will also be able to use the facility to build additional Scorpenes or the new line of submarines under Project-75I.
Over indecision on Strategic Partnerships under the new Defence Procurement Procedure, the Request for Proposal (RFP) for P-75I is facing delays.
