Publish Date : 13-Jun-2016
In a bid to boost energy efficiency yield enhanced production capacities for propylene and crude C4, Austria's major provider of innovative solutions in the fields of polyolefins, base chemicals and fertilizers, Borealis, is spending EUR 40m (approx. USD 45 million) to upgrade its steam cracker in Porvoo, Finland.
The company said this will help expand the site's propylene output by 30,000 t/y, while capacity for crude C4 will be enhanced by 10,000 t/y.
The money will also be used to improve the quality of all all propylene produced at the site to polymer grade, thereby raising value as well as productivity in the adjacent polypropylene production plant.
This would allow Borealis to secure its position among Europe's most innovative and dependable polyethylene and polypropylene suppliers.
The project would be completed in Q3-2017.
Speaking on the plan, Borealis executive vice president Base Chemicals Markku Korvenranta said, "Investing in upgrades and capacity expansion at strategic Borealis production locations such as Porvoo enables us to improve the competitiveness of our strong, integrated polyolefins business in Europe."
