Publish Date : 22-Jun-2016

The multinational oil and gas company Shell last year has made overall investment of $195.5 million in Nigeria for social causes.

The figure represents the Shell groups highest commitment for social sector in any nation.

The company has further stated that it has offered almost $145.1 million of the money to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), even though the industry has suffered due to large amount of crude pilfering, illegitimate refining activities and uncertain business scenario throughout the year.

The oil giant has also said that similarly there has been channeling of $50.4 million into social investment projects by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) limited operated Joint Venture and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPco).

The SPDC MD & Country Chair at Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor disclosed, Shell and its partners believe they can make a real difference in the lives of Nigerians, and we have targeted our investments at community and enterprise development, education and health. Of course, we cannot take the place of government but we are keen to play our part in the development of a country weve been part of for more than 50 years.

He has made these observations on their accomplishments during a press meet over the weekend in Lagos.

Okunbor has also revealed that Shell Companies in Nigeria have also offered sustained support to develop the human resources and contracting capability of the nation, with investment of around $0.9 billion on local contracting and procurement.

The priority areas under these initiatives to help the people and community contractors of Nigeria has been the ownership of key assets like rigs, helicopters and marine vessels.

According to the Shell official, the Shell Companies in Nigeria are also working dedicatedly to develop and use natural gas, steering its production and supply to the local as well as the global customers.

Okunbor added, Although, SPDC JVs market share of domestic gas has reduced through a series of divestments since 2010, which enables Nigerian companies to play a more strategic role, Shell companies still remain a crucial part of the national gas energy mix. For example, our Afam V1 power plant alone contributed 14% of Nigerias grid-connected electricity in 2015, consolidating its achievements since first power in August 2008. Another entity, Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) supplies natural gas to 87 industrial customers.

He has also stated that the company has been screening the security condition in its operating regions in the Niger Delta in a constant manner and adopting adequate measures so that the safety of its employees and contractors can be ascertained.
