Fiji : FIJI announced $4m plans to support the strengthening of the shipping sector

Publish Date : 08-Jul-2016

The Fijian Assistant Infrastructure Minister Vijay Nath has made an announcement on the provisioning of $4 million in funds to the Government Shipping Services (GSS) to facilitate procurement of a new multipurpose vessel in order to augment the capability of the Ministry to continue its supports to education and set up a small hospital facility to deliver healthcare services for the coastal communities.

The Minister has revealed that allocations of $3.4m to maintain the upgrading of the government wharf and $2.3m to complete the new warehouse of GSS have also been made.

Mr. Nath added, "The new building will house the engineering/electrical workshop office space plus dry and cold storage facilities."

He has informed the Parliament that there has been allocation of $2.3m in funds to provide supports to the hugely required shipping services to outer islands, which is normally judged as impractical in terms of finances, and to foster development of a competitive shipping sector.

Mr. Nath has further said the Department of Works has been provided with $400,000 in funding to carry on electricity supplies to five rural government stations in Lakeba, Rotuma, Vunisea, Nabouwalu and in Taveuni.

The Assistant Minister has also stressed that the Department of Meteorological and Hydrology is dedicated to deliver on-time and dependable information related to the weather hydrology and climate spaces to the public, industry and civil aviation on normal as well as extreme weather conditions.

Mr. Nath added, "One of the key items of their budget is to replace the automatic weather observations system project in Nadi International Airport at a cost of $1.2m."
