South Africa : ESKOM receives financial aid from ADB for Renewable Energy Transmission Grid

Publish Date : 20-Jul-2016

The plan of South African government to extend renewable energy infrastructure in the nation have obtained a major boost in the form of financial aid from the African Development Bank.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has declared a $1.34 billion loan to South African utility Eskom for the extension and bolstering of its transmission network. This exercise would allow Eskom to secure more renewable energy.

South Africas transmission network has seen significant changes in terms of new capacity added over the past few years. Various projects under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) have been licensed.

It has become imperative that Eskom invests in improving the grids ability to absorb more renewable energy, with the planned extension of the REIPPPP.

South Africa managed to apportion 5,443 MW of capacity, primarily in the form of wind and solar power projects via the first 4 auctions under the REIPPPP. A total number of 79 projects have been apportioned to some of the leading national and international project developers.
