Publish Date : 25-Jul-2016
Sri Lankan LAUGFS Holdings Ltd. has been mulling over a strategy to start procurement of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Iran once again.
The companys MD W.K.H. Wegapitiya has revealed that they are considering restarting of imports of Iranian LPG.
He has made this revelation on the sidelines of the Iranian Petroleum Minister Bijan Zanganehs meeting with the Sri Lankan Petroleum Resources Development Minister Chandima Weerakkody held in Tehran on Sunday.
Wegapitiya has uttered his delight over the lifting of economic and banking bans from Iran, from which Sri Lanka used to import LPG shipments before the imposition of sanctions.
He has further said that the island nation had to suspend its imports from Iran due to the sanctions and started purchases from other countries such as Malaysia and Oman to meet its requirements.
He added, "Besides resuming our purchases, we are seeking to boost our imports from Iran." Wegapitiya added, "We hope Iran will set the ground for enhancing large LPG volumes by facilitating international banking transactions."
He has also stated that LAUGFS, apart from expanding the size of earlier pacts with the Islamic Republic, will also sign new deals for the procurement of LPG from Iran.
Wegapitiya has further said that his company had imported 10,000 tons of Iranian LPG prior to the imposition of bans on Tehran in 2012.
