The Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) contractor, responsible for the four-laning of the Kazhakuttam-Mukkola stretch of NH 66 bypass project, is considering sidestepping the Chakka-Enchakkal corridor to obey the two-year deadline.
The EPC contractor has been mulling over this due to the delay in pulling down the ramp built by the State to Terminal-II and on the access to the airport from the 26.5-km bypass corridor, which is being expanded to four-lane one.
Although the State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has intervened along with the National Highways Authority of Indias (NHAI) demands, any move regarding this regard is yet to emerge.
According to a top NHAI official, final decision on alignment of the corridor is needed to begin work on the 2-km section between Chakka and Enchakkal.
He added, The existing ramp has to be demolished to ensure hassle-free connectivity to the airport and flow of traffic on the bypass.
There had also been delays in the construction of the new Chakka ROB across the railway line and the Vehicular Underpass at Chakka Junction. Following approval, the Railways had already provided the ROBs design, but diversion of the vehicular traffic is required to begin the works, according to the project officials.
The EPC contractor has been successful to complete just 20% of the works during the first year of the two-year deadline, revealed sources at the NHAI.
The NHAI, on the other hand, has also been facing pressure to evade the work on the 2-km section from the contractor.
The State Government of Kerala, meanwhile, has directed Natpac to examine the matter as the NHAIs design failed to convince the AAI. Natpac has suggested four options, while the NHAI and the AAI has agreed for part demolition of the entry and exit segments of the current 430-metre ramp of the airport.
