Sri Lanka : Government secured Cabinet nods to procure new fighter planes for the Air Force

Publish Date : 16-Aug-2016

The Sri Lankan Cabinet of Ministers has offered clearance to the Government for its strategy to buy new fighter aircraft for the Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) for the replacement of the old fighter jets for better safety provisions.

The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to purchase new fighters in order to replace the ageing fighter planes of the SLAF so that the forces remain well-equipped to ensure maritime security and also to stay prepared for handling any sudden threat.

The SLAF officials have stressed that the procurement involves heavy expenditure, but Sri Lanka is required to maintain its security and preparedness considering the existing geo-political situation of the world, and it calls for acquisition of a new generation and technologically highly advanced aircraft to replace its current ageing fleet of Israeli Kfirs and MIg 27s. The modern fleet is going to boost the air defense capability of the country significantly.

The spokesperson of the Sri Lankan Cabinet Rajitha Senaratne has revealed that the Government has been mulling over procuring eight multi-role fighter aircraft with related weapons based on a government-to-government procurement model.

The Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, who is also in charge of the Defense Ministry, has made a proposal of securing expressions of interest from interested aircraft manufacturing companies, assistant manufacturers, and authorized government agents on the government-to-government basis for the procurement of the fighter jets.
