Bangladesh : Bangladesh to allow China to select contractors only for priority projects

Publish Date : 19-Aug-2016

As Dhaka's efforts to impose limited bidding are yet to generate positive results, Bangladesh will continue to allow China to choose contractors only for priority projects funded with affordable loans from Beijing.

For over a year, the government has pushed to put in place a limited tendering system for all projects financed by China's concessional credits.

However, the issue is still pending as China has not given its final decision on the limited tendering in spite of agreeing on the issue and exchanging several letters and holding talks over a period of over a year.

This has led the government to decide to follow a two-way policy for projects funded with affordable loans from China.

The cabinet panel on financial affairs decided that in case of special priority projects the related ministry can follow direct procurement as a temporary arrangement.

This means that China's will select contractors -- without any tendering process or competition for the time being -- for the priority projects it would fund with soft loans.
