Barbados,China,Russian Federation : OLLO to sell used subscriber equipment to an internet service provider in RUSSIA

Publish Date : 20-Aug-2016

A major Russian internet service provider will acquire around 4,000 units of second-hand subscriber equipment terminals from the WiMax operator Ollo.

These China-made equipment terminals, which were procured by Ollo six years back, will be deployed by the Russian company in areas close to an airport where the spectrums of 2100, 2700 and 900 band except the 3500 band are restricted, according to the Ollo CEO Igor Grakovich.

He added, Some other equipment will also be exported as scrap. We are waiting for the telecom regulator's no-objection certificate.

Ollo has filed an application with the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) seeking clearance from the regulator to export the second-hand equipment to Russia.

A BTRC official has revealed that the Commission at its recently held meeting has offered approval to Ollo for its proposal.

According to the industry sources, this will be Bangladeshs first ever official export of used telecom equipment.

Grakovich has stated that the company is implementing the fastest data network throughout Bangladesh and selling the obsolete equipment to the foreign market as a part of its strategy to change the WiMax equipment.

Ollo, however, has refrained from divulging the details on the proceeds from its latest sale deal. The countrys first LTE operator has rolled out its LTE network across 14 areas in the nation.

Ollos obsolete equipment replacement strategy calls for procurement of new ones from overseas market. The firm will import dual-band equipment to be used with the 800 and 2600 bands. Once installed, it will be able to provide improved internet speed and coverage to the users.

Grakovich has disclosed that they will have to resolve some regulatory issues prior to the launch of LTE operations in Dhaka -- between Uttara and Dhanmondi.

Ollo is also involved in the development of sites for the access to information scheme under the Prime Minister's Office and Dhaka North City Corporation.

Ollo was unveiled in the year 2010 jointly by a pair of Bangladeshi internet service providers - Internet Exchange Ltd (BIEL) and New Generation Graphics Ltd (NGGL).

The companies merged in 2013, and started operating as BIEL. Then the combined unit secured additional spectrum in the 2600 band and licence for launching the LTE services.
