Publish Date : 01-Sep-2016

President Uhuru Kenyatta will commission the first phase of the second container terminal at the Mombasa Port.

Phase One comprises of two berths, number 20 with a quay length of 210 metres to assist medium sized vessels and number 21 which has a 350-metre quay length capable of accommodating post-Panama vessels of 8,000 TEU capacity.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Communications Officer Hajj Masemo stated that the second terminal is one of Vision 2030 projects and was sponsored by the government of Japan which offered a cheap loan with an interest of 0.2 per cent interest with repayment period of 30 years.

He said that the three-phase terminal sits on 100 acres of land reclaimed from the Indian Ocean. He added, The first phase was constructed at a cost of Sh30 billion. It has two Ship-Shire Gantry cranes and four Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes for yard operations. Toy Construction Company of Japan was appointed to construct the facility in 2012 for 4 years.

Construction concerned dredging and reclaiming of land, paving of yards and building office blocks, workshop and all other essential terminal facilities. A new 6 lane access road was also built connecting the Port Rietz Road for ease of entry and exit of cargo traffic.

Masemo said, It also involved an environment impact assessment that cleared the project and re-planting of more than 1,000 mangrove trees to replace those affected by the construction.

Masemo said that the facility has brought on board 550,000 TEU capacity to the port raising the facilitys total capacity to 1.65 million TEUs making Mombasa the biggest port in East and Central Africa.

He said, Funding for the second phase has already been approved by the Cabinet and procurement process is now underway to procure a contarctor who is expected to start work by mid next year.
