Oman : Oman seeks consultant for large-scale solar project

Publish Date : 18-Oct-2016

The Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) will be appointing a consultant to provide technical and economic advisory services for a large-scale solar power projects in the sultanate.

Between October 17 and October 31, the request for proposal (RfP) documents will be available at OPWP offices. The deadline to submit bids has been set for November 27.

The proposed capacity of the solar part was not revealed.

Development of the solar facility will be done under the independent power producer (IPP) model, with the long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) to be awarded in a tender. The competitive process would likely take place in 2017.

Till date, bidding in similar tenders in the region has resulted in the lowest rates for solar power globally.

Recent tender by Abu Dhabi for a 350-MW photovoltaic (PV) park got one bid of USD 24.2 (EUR 22) per MWh, while in June, Dubai had a USD-29.9-per-MWh offer in an 800-MW solar auction.

Oman had earlier planned for a 200-MW park, which was however withdrawn. For that project, Adam and Manah were listed as the most suitable locations, with solar radiation data being collected there since 2010 to facilitate future development.
