India : Parrikar-led Council may consider acquisition of M777 ultra light howitzers from US
Publish Date : 21-Oct-2016
The Defense Acquisition Council led by Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar is expected to consider plans to buy 145 M777 ultra light howitzers from the US.
Inspite of being approved more than thrice by the Defense Ministry under Parrikar as well as his UPA predecessor, AK Antony, the plan was in the pipeline for several years now.
The USD 650-million deal for the 145 howitzers is crucial as the Army will deploy these guns along the mountainous lines bordering both China and Pakistan.
The Defense Ministry said, "The DAC is expected to discuss the progress in this deal and may also consider certain deviations from the procurement procedure involved in the deal."
