Belgium,China : COSCO, DEME inks joint venture deal to develop offshore wind energy in China
Publish Date : 04-Nov-2016
Chinese shipping firm COSCO and Belgian marine engineering group DEME have inked a joint venture deal to develop offshore wind energy in China.
This cooperation agreement would likely drive breakbulk demand, as the partners will aim to significantly expand the installed capacity of offshore wind energy by 2020.
Alain Bernard, CEO, DEME said, Thanks to the accumulated know-how and experience with complex infrastructure projects at sea, DEME can support and carry out China COSCO Shippings offshore wind vision.
DEME will be providing engineering, procurement, construction, installation and maintenance advice through its subsidiary GeoSea. The two firms will build on the already active COSCOCS DEME joint venture in the offshore Chinese wind energy sector.
The joint venture with China COSCO Shipping is a win-win for both parties and will contribute to realizing the ambitious Chinese climate objectives. Such combinations have repeatedly proven successful in DEMEs dredging and environmental divisions, Bernard added.
COSCO is one of the largest shipping lines worldwide. It owns and operates a fleet of around 130 vessels.
DEME was formed with the merger of Belgian dredging companies Ackermans & van Haaren and Societe Generale de Dragage, but has since expanded its services to include breakbulk and logistics.
