United Kingdom : Crowders Nurseries wins HS2 rail link's plant supply contract

Publish Date : 18-Nov-2016

Crowders Nurseries has been selected for growing the first tranche of up to 7 million native trees and shrubs that will be used to develop new woodland habitats alongside the HS2 rail link.

Crowders has won a 10-year contract to supply the trees which will be planted along Phase I of the project, from London to the West Midlands.

This advance procurement contract for trees and plants is the biggest ever that the government has let to our sector and Crowders said: "We are delighted to have been successful. Its a great endorsement of our capabilities to win such a huge contract and It will underpin our business and provide security and opportunities for employees for the next 10 years. The numbers are very significant and our first growing instruction contains 1.8m plants with over 500,000 container grown items and 130,000 trees over 2m tall both bare-root and root-balled."

Crowders beat a Hillier-led group including Wyevale Nurseries and Oakover, a Johnsons of Whixley bid.

Planting will be consolidated with the construction programme and designed to help blend the train line into the current landscape. Lost woodland will be replaced and new plantings will help to develop 'green corridors' connectign presently isolated wooded areas with new ones.

Construction is due to start in early 2017, with the first trees planted in sites identified for advance planting from autumn 2017 to spring 2018.
