The Mackay Ring Road Stage 1 project has reached its next major milestone with expressions of interest now called for the construction tender of the $565 million project. Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said construction of the Mackay Ring Road is part of the Australian Governments commitment to fix the Bruce Highway.

The record investment in the Bruce Highway is already saving lives and improving travel times. The Australian and Queensland governments are working together to deliver an $8.5 billion package of works on this key national freight route, Mr Chester said. The project is estimated to support an average of 600 jobs, reduce travel times between Brisbane and Cairns, and improve driving conditions for local motorists. I am delighted to see the next milestone reached as we work toward a safer road network.

Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety Mark Bailey said the project is the largest ever undertaken by the Queensland Government in the Mackay/Whitsunday region. It is a huge project totalling 11.3km in length. It includes the construction of 13 new bridges including overpasses, dual lane roundabouts at each end, and a new river crossing over the Pioneer River with a 100-year flood immunity, Mr Bailey said.

The detailed design phase for the project is nearing completion and should be finalised by the end of 2016. Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen said the project will include a bypass of the Mackay urban area. Not only will this save people time, but it will also return Mackays local roads to residents, making it safer for everyone, Mr Christensen said.

This first stage of the Mackay Ring Road project will bypass 10 sets of traffic lights, which will be a real reduction in travel times on the Bruce Highway. This is a great outcome for local businesses reliant on good transport links for exporting goods.
Member for Mirani Jim Pearce said early works which have begun included relocation of services, earthworks and realignment of local roads to make room for the Ring Road.

In order to get this project moving earlier, the project team identified early preparatory works which commenced in September, he said. Major construction on this project is set to start by mid-2017, and Im looking forward to seeing its completion by early 2020, weather permitting. Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said the Australian and Queensland Governments are getting on with delivering this project and delivering jobs for the region.

Not only in the project supporting more than 600 jobs, it will also boost local industry by allowing greater access to the Mackay Port. The Australian Government is contributing $448 million and the Queensland Government $117 million towards the $565 million project.
