Publish Date : 10-Dec-2016

Norway announced its plan to become the fourth export client for the Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

It will procure five for delivery in 2021-22 as a replacement for 6 Lockheed Martin P-3 Orions and 3 Dassault Falcon 20s, the deliveries of which occured in the 1990s.

The cost is said to be $1.5 billion which includes sensors and weapons.

Boeing meanwhile supplied the first of eight P-8As to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) last month.

Norwegian minister of defense Ine Eriksen Soreide, "The P-8A is exactly what we need to maintain our important contribution to the [NATO] alliance.

She added, "The maritime domain is becoming more important as we speak."

About 7 times its land mass, the country has a large maritime area of responsibility.

The Norwegian Parliament is expected to approve the procurement this month.
