United Kingdom : U.K. offers contract for two more OPVs to BAE
Publish Date : 13-Dec-2016
BAE Systems welcomed British Minister for Defense Procurement Harriet Baldwin to its Govan shipyard in Glasgow, Scotland, 8th December, to announce a contract worth 287 million (around $361 million) covering production of a further 2 River Class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), to be called Tamar and Spey, and support services for the now five ship OPV program, bringing its total value to 635 million (around $799 million).
The Ministry of Defence said with the work on the five new vessels, 800 jobs will be sustained at shipyards on the Clyde through contracted work and preserve the production skills required to build the Royal Navy's future Type 26 frigates.
Managing Director of BAE Systems Naval Ships, Iain Stevenson, said: "Securing this contract for two further River Class OPVs is testament to the proven capability of the design and the tremendous skill and dedication of employees on the program. Our investment in the latest digital design technologies and new processes is enabling us to deliver equipment of the highest quality at the lowest possible cost, helping to secure the long-term future of our highly skilled industry in the U.K. I am looking forward to seeing both the OPV and Type 26 ships in construction across both our shipyards in Glasgow next year."
The design of the offshore patrol vessel builds on the Royal Navy's current River Class ships with versions already in service in Brazil and Thailand.
