VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a company of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), today announced that it has received a contract in the amount of about US$16.5m from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Transportation (VDOT) for the Design, Construction and Delivery of a new 499-passenger/70-vehicles Jamestown Ferry.
The new ferry will replace the current aging ferry, The Virginian. Measuring 270ft x 65ft x 15ft, it will be capable of carrying up to 70 passenger vehicles, or 14 trucks/buses and accommodating up to 499 passengers with a 150 passenger located in the Passenger Cabin on the Upper Deck.
The ferry will be designed and certified to ABS Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels for Service on Rivers and Intracoastal Waterways, US 46 CFR, Subchapter H, Passenger Vessels. The vessel will also be designed to meet the accessibility requirements of Proposed Accessibility Guidelines for Passenger Vessels, United States Access Board.
The ferry will be operated by the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry Operations Service, which provides a critical transportation link between Virginia and North Carolina operating at the James City County at Glasshouse Point and Surry County at Scotland Wharf. The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry System currently operates four ferry boats, including the Pocahontas Ferry, which was also designed and constructed by VT Halter Marines, Moss Point Marine shipyard and delivered in 1995. VT Halter Marines shipyards have designed, constructed and delivered more ferry and passenger vessels than almost any other U.S. shipyard, for the states of Virginia, New York, Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Alaska, California, Washington, and the territory of Puerto Rico.
In addition to the VDOT, the construction will be overseen by Alion Science and Technology (Alion), who is designated as the VDOTs On-Site Representative throughout the vessel construction. Construction of the ferry is expected to be completed in April 2018.
