United States : BWX Technologies' arm wins 2 competitively bid awards under VPM launch tube contract

Publish Date : 31-Dec-2016

BWX Technologies, Inc. has announced today that its arm BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, Inc. has won two competitively bid awards (development and fabrication) as part of a single contract for Virginia Payload Module (VPM) launch tubes.

General Dynamics Electric Boat offered the nearly $35 million contract to support the Virginia-class submarine program.

The VPM will include 4 large-diameter payload tubes in a new hull section to be inserted in Virginia-class submarines.

Work has already started for development programs and qualification of the processes needed to produce these payload tubes.

BWXT said development would be completed by 2019.

BWXT will carry out the work at its Mount Vernon, Ind. production plant, the same site where launch tubes are being made for Columbia-class (earlier called Ohio Replacement Program) submarines. The company is currently adding nearling 120 new jobs at Mount Vernon to support this and other new production activities.

Peyton S. (Sandy) Baker, President and Chief Executive Officer of BWXT, said, "We are excited to begin Virginia Payload Module fabrication work as we have been investing in our facilities to meet the needs of Electric Boat and the U.S. Navy in preparation for such an opportunity. This opportunity also illustrates BWXT's ability to grow organically into related areas of our heavy component manufacturing business."
