Nepal : DoR extends deadline of global tender for feasibility study of Kathmandu-Birgunj Railway Line

Publish Date : 04-Jan-2017

The Department of Railways (DoR) has extended the last date of the global tender to conduct feasibility study for the Kathmandu-Birgunj Railway Line by a week.

A senior divisional engineer with the DoR, Prakash Upadhyaya, said, "We have extended the deadline till January 8."

Giving a 31-day deadline, the department earlier sought global tender to conduct the feasibility study of the Kathmandu-Birgunj Railway Line on November 29.

The consultant will be given 6 months to carry out feasibility study, prepare preliminary cost estimate, and propose the best technical, financial and economical routes from the six months of the selection. It will also be required to recommend three routes for the railway line and suggest the best one.

The department said the process to conduct feasibility study of Kathmandu-Birgunj railway line was launched as the service will be more affordable, eco-friendly and consumes less time.

As over 70 percent of its global trade is done through this border point, Birgunj is a key trading point for Nepal.

Upadhyay noted that the railway line would be important to link Birgunj and Rasuwagadhi with the rail networks.

He said, "The department is taking forward the construction of north-south rail networks as the work for preparing a Detailed Project Report for Mechi-Mahakali Railway has already begun."
