After a European tender, the Lander of Sachsen-Anhalt and Thuringen have offered a contract to DB Regio to run the new RE18 passenger service from December 2018 to December 2023.

Service RE18, will be launched as the final element of the Saale-Thringen-Sudharz network, and provide a fast connection between Jena-Goschwitz and Halle (Saale), calling at Merseburg, Weienfels and Naumburg.

The two-hourly service aggregating 455 000 train-km/year will be run using locomotive-hauled trainsets comprising three upgraded double-deck coaches.

Abellio had also shown interest in the contract.
