JICA launched the Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa recently at a side event of the sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD ), held in Africa for the first time.

The initiative, abbreviated as IFNA, aims to improve nutrition in Africa, with a particular focus on the region south of the Sahara Desert, which is said to have some 220 million undernourished people.It is also said that nearly 800 million people in the world are chronically undernourished. Whats more, some 159 million children ages 5 and under reportedly are stunted.

"End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture" is one of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to be achieved by 2030.

The IFNA supports the promotion of specific initiatives in the field and the achievement of nutrition improvement goals by helping various African countries and aid agencies to deepen their partnerships. It is working to formulate a nutrition improvement strategy for African countries and to promote and spread practical activities to improve nutrition in African countries during the 10 years leading up to 2025.

JICA will continue proactively engaging in food and nutrition improvement activities including IFNA, and it will work toward solving the world's food and nutrition problems.
