Oman : Be'ah to invite proposals to recycle waste tyres

Publish Date : 12-Jan-2017

The state-owned entity responsible for managing the solid waste sector, Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (Be'ah) plans to invite proposals for suitably recycling the large volume of waste tyres stockpiled at major sites around Oman.

Nearly 45,000 tonnes of so-called 'end-of-life' (ELT) tyres are generated every year in the country a figure that is expected to rise in line with population growth and urbanisation.

These tyres have piled up at two key dumpsites, for want of environmentally safe ways of disposing of this waste. The largest is in Dhofar Governorate where several millions of waste tyres are presently being amassed.

If not suitably and safely processed and disposed, the tyre dumps not only pose a major fire hazard but also threaten the groundwater and surrounding environment.

A tender proposed to be launched next month will aim to elicit proposals from the private sector on innovative ways of maximising the recovery of commercially valuable ingredients from the waste tyres.

The tender's scope and objectives will be discussed at a workshop targeted at interested firms.
