Publish Date : 24-Jan-2017

BNSF Railway, one of the largest North American freight railroad network operators, has made an announcement on its investment strategy worth $3.4bn for the current year intended for the replacement and maintenance of its core network and associated assets. The newly announced strategy for the 2017 investment resembles the firms plan worth $3.9bn in last year.

The US-based freight railroad network has announced that the allocated amount will pay for a number of projects planned for this year comprising replacement and advancement of rail, rail ties and ballast, in addition to the companys rolling stock sustenance. Planned investment for maintenance for the current year will incorporate track surfacing of 20,000 miles as well as undercutting work, apart from the replacement of around 600 miles of rail and almost 3 million rail ties.

The President & CEO of BNSF Railway Carl Ice explained, This years capital plan ensures we continue to operate a safe and reliable rail network, while capturing the new opportunities our customers will present to us. Our ongoing investments, along with the outstanding efforts of our employees, resulted in the lowest number of derailments in company history last year.

The strength and condition of our railroad today gives us the confidence that we will operate safely in the communities we serve and meet our customers expectations of reliable and consistent service.

BNSF, as part of the strategy, will invest $400m for expansion projects, while positive train control deployment will entail $100m in outlay. The company will spend an additional $400m for the procurement of locomotives as well as freight cars, plus other key equipment.

The BNSF network in Texas, with $255m in investment, will become the top beneficiary among its peers in other US States. Illinois takes the second place with $190m, followed by Washington ($175m), California ($170m), Kansas ($125m), Missouri ($120m), Montana ($100m) and Nebraska ($100m). BNSF, also with a footprint in three provinces of Canada, manages operations of almost 32,500 route miles of track across 28 States in the US.
