Publish Date : 25-Jan-2017

TransNamib, the national railway operator of Namibia, has made acquisition of a new fleet of six Brazilian trains recently to replace its ageing ones.

TransNamibs new trains had arrived at the Port of Walvis Bay on 13th of this month.

The Acting CEO of TransNamib Mbahupu Hippy Tjivikua has disclosed that the new train fleet is anticipated to be pressed into service within two weeks.

The Government of Namibia will provide total support for the procurement of new trains from Brazil valued at around R300 million by the State owned railway enterprise, added the CEO.

According to the official, only 52 of the 97 trains of TransNamib are operational now.

The CEO revealed, These are the best locomotives TransNamib ever bought; they have modern technology and are fuel efficient. I have no doubt that they will serve their purpose.

TransNamib, in a bid to ascertain effective transportation of cargo in the country, has initiated process for the procurement of new trains two years back, according to Tjivikua.

He has also explained that the new train procurement decision is attributable to the ageing fleet of the Namibian company.

He has also stated that TransNamib is optimistic that the fleet of new trains will facilitate better profits for the company, as it will have added capacity for the transportation of cargo in the country.

Tjivikua further said, We need to acquire 80 extra trains in the next four years for us to be able to say we are at a good standard.

According to the CEO, the ageing railway, though an additional problem for the company, has started getting focus now.

Tjivikua added, We cannot bring new trains to use on old railway lines, so what we are going to do in the meantime is to repair the railways.
