Zimbabwe : $6 million released by the government to procure additional cotton inputs
Publish Date : 31-Jan-2017
An amount of around $6 million has been released by the government to procure additional cotton inputs under the Presidential Input Scheme, which raises hopes for a much bigger harvest, said an official.
Farmers from certain major cotton cultivating areas had reported shortages of fertilizers and chemicals as farmers planted a bigger hectarage than the initially projected.
While about 6000 tonnes were distributed by the Government, it is estimated that an additional 2000 tonnes of seed leftovers from the previous season might have also been planted. This indicates that some farmers planted nearly 2 hectares, more than what the Government is supporting under the scheme.
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Dr John Mangudya said, Government has approved the procurement of more fertilizers and chemicals to cover for that mismatch (of the targeted hectarage and the actual planted).
The $6 million worth of inputs comes apart from $42 million the Government is spending to fund cotton production.
The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe is administering the programme, the company which has since been taken over by the Government through conversion of debt into equity.
The national cotton crop would likely register substantial increase during this year and this growth has been driven by Government support in the form of free inputs and the good rains.
