Publish Date : 06-Feb-2017

Austrian state railway operator Osterreichische Bundesbahnen (OBB) has placed an order with Siemens for up to 200 Vectron locomotives.

Siemens will be supplying up to 100 alternating current (AC) locomotives, a further 50 alternating current (AC) locomotives with diesel power modules, in addition to 50 multisystem (MS) locomotives.

At the time of signing of the contract, OBB placed a firm order for 30 MS locomotives.

Siemens Mobility Division CEO Jochen Eickholt said, "Winning the biggest tender for locomotives in Europe underscores one thing above all: the capability of our Vectron platform. It offers the greatest flexibility throughout the locomotive's entire lifecycle. And for operators that means they can make long-term plans for the future."

The first locomotive units will be built in the Siemens plant in Munich-Allach, Germany, and are expected to be delivered beginning next year.

OBBs freight division Rail Cargo Group will be operating the locomotives, which would be used for cross-border freight transport in Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. All locomotives will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) and will feature national control systems. The locomotives with a maximum output of 6,400kW, will have a top speed of 160km/h.
