United Kingdom : MoD signs 146m deal to modernize RAF's long-range, air-launched missile
Publish Date : 27-Feb-2017
The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has inked a 146m deal with MBDA to modernize the Royal Air Force's (RAF) long-range, air-launched missile.
In order to keep them ready for operational use, the deal will see that the UK's Storm Shadow and France's SCALP missiles are modernized.
The proposed upgrade would keep the missile in service for the next 10 years.
British Minister for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin said: "Storm Shadow is a proven and vital missile for the RAF, and this 146m upgrade will ensure it is always ready for whenever our Armed Forces might need it to defend our way of life. This contract is an important part of the governments 178bn plan to ensure our armed forces have the right equipment at the right time."
Under the deal, work includes midlife renovation of current missile parts like the turbo-jet engine, an upgrade of the navigational system, and replacement of items like the cabling, seals and gaskets.
Apart from another 40 jobs across the supply chain, the deal would help support nearly 60 jobs at MBDA facilities in Stevenage and Bolton.
