Australia : $11 million project completed for Brisbanes southside

Publish Date : 08-Mar-2017

An $11 million project to ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective supply of high voltage electricity across Brisbanes southern suburbs has been completed.

The Powerlink project involved refitting 42 transmission towers along 12 kilometres of line between Powerlinks Algester, Runcorn and Belmont substations.

Energy Minister Mark Bailey said works included replacing essential components of the high voltage electricity network supplying Brisbanes southside.

The project supported 39 jobs and demonstrated Powerlinks ability to safely and efficiently maintain the performance of the transmission network, he said.

Powerlink plays an important role in powering the states economy, being responsible for the reliable supply of electricity to more than four million Queenslanders.

These transmission lines were built in 1971. With refit work now completed, they will continue to reliably power the southern Brisbane metropolitan area well into the future.

Local MPs welcomed the completion of the project:

Member for Algester Leeanne Enoch said - This is great news for local residents and business operators. The new infrastructure provides them greater confidence in the safe and reliable power supply to the local area.

Member for Sunnybank Peter Russo said The refit project will safeguard network reliability into the future and avoid or delay the need for building new infrastructure.

Member for Stretton Duncan Pegg said I want to thank landholders and the local community for their patience while this essential project was delivered.

Powerlink Chief Executive Merryn York said specialist crews strengthened tower foundations, replaced corroded bolts and steelwork, cleaned and hand-painted towers, and restored anti-climbing barriers.

The projects smooth delivery also highlights Powerlinks ability to implement customised engineering solutions in high-density urban areas, she said.

We successfully refitted towers located in residential areas, near busy major roads including the Pacific Motorway, Logan Road and Pinelands Road, and in public spaces such as the Bulimba Creek Bikeway.

Ms York said Powerlink was committed to safe work practices at all times and worked closely with local residents and stakeholders to minimise any potential impacts.
