The Washington-headquartered World Bank has accomplished the signing of a financing agreement worth $100 million with the Government of India in order to support the Uttarakhand Health Systems Development Project.
The World Bank-backed project in Uttarakhand is aimed at enhancing access to better quality healthcare services, mainly for the residents of the hilly districts of the State, and extending health financial risk coverage for the people.
The $125 million project has two key elements of innovations of involving the private sector management and system upgrading.
The Uttarakhand Government will offer a counterpart funding of $25 million for the project.
Raj Kumar, Joint Secretary at the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has signed the financing agreement with the World Bank Acting Country Director for India Hisham Abdo.
The World Bank official has also inked a project agreement with Neeraj Kharwal, Additional Secretary (Health) of the State of Uttarakhand.
The project is intended to have numerous self-contained groups of clinical services run by operators based on the public private partnership (PPP) model, and will deliver services for free of cost or at small fees, supported by a strong supervision and monitoring system completely integrated with the extended health insurance scheme in the State. It will be supportive to the fortification of the States capability for the execution of the project.
The Uttarakhand Health Systems Development Project is slated to be completed on September 30, 2023.
