The opening ceremony of the UNICEF Seoul office will take place at the Seoul Global Center on April 11. The event will bring together officials of relevant government agencies and Seoul City, members of the National Assembly and those at international organizations in the Republic of Korea, including Second Vice Foreign Minister Ahn Chong-ghee and Deputy Executive Director Omar Abdi of UNICEF.
Vice Foreign Minister Ahn will deliver welcoming remarks, in which he will express hope that the UNICEF Seoul office will help boost partnership between the ROK and UNICEF, as well as the ROK governments commitment to continue contributing to efforts to promote childrens rights across the world.
UNICEF, after opening its country office in the ROK in 1962 for aid projects for children, closed it in 1993, as the ROK saw a growth in income which led to the end of the projects. The purpose of the reopening of the UNICEF office in the ROK -- totally different from that of the former UNICEF office in the ROK -- is to step up cooperation between UNICEF and the country, which has drastically increased its contribution to children of the international community. The opening of the new Seoul office demonstrates the fact the ROK, a former recipient of aid in child nutrition and education, has become one of the major donors to UNICEF, the largest and leading UN agency for the protection of the childrens rights across the world.
The ROK, the 12th-largest contributor to UNICEF, has been stepping up policy coordination with the UN agency, as can be seen from its service on the Executive Board, the agencys decision-making body, for five terms and annually convened bilateral policy consultations. Likewise, the non-profit Korean Committee for UNICEF raises the third largest amount of fund from the private sector among the national committees of UNICEF.
The Seoul office will mark the third UNICEF will have opened after those in Tokyo and Brussels with the aim to increase cooperation with its major donor government.
The UNICEF Seoul office will carry significance as a foundation for strategic, multi-tier development of the ROK-UNICEF partnership for helping children around the world. Going forward, the ROK government will work closely with UNICEF through UNICEF Seoul office in an effort to increase its contribution to children across. the world.
