Cote Dlvoire,Zambia,Zimbabwe : AFDB confirmed its commitment for the 2400MW Batoka Gorge Project

Publish Date : 18-Apr-2017

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has reiterated its pledge to support the 2400MW Batoka Gorge hydroelectric project and reaffirmed that it will serve as the lead financier for the ambitious scheme.

Amadou Hott, the AfDB Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth Sector Complex, has offered this support commitment during a recently held investors conference for the project in Zambia.

The Zambian Vice President and four ministers from the Southern countries of African Zambia and Zimbabwe were also present at this meeting.

The Zambezi River Authority, an equal joint venture business of the Zambian and Zimbabwean Governments, is developing the Batoka Gorge project.

The Authority has been established by Zambia and Zimbabwe to set up, run, monitor and maintain hydropower projects along the Zambezi River shared by these two nations.

The AfDB official stated, The Bank has been working together with Zambia and Zimbabwe on major energy projects such as the transformative Itezhi Power Generation and Transmission Project, and rehabilitation of power infrastructure in Zimbabwe, among others. The Batoka Scheme is in line with the objectives of AfDBs New Deal on Energy for Africa.

Hott has further said that implementation of transformative regional projects like Batoka is key to achieve the goal for the New Deal for complete access to energy by the year 2025.

The Zambian and Zimbabwean Governments have already assigned the regional lender as the Lead Coordinator for the Batoka project, implementation of which will be carried out jointly with other development partners.
