United States : UNICEF procures 2.5 billion doses of vaccines for children in 100 countries

Publish Date : 04-May-2017

UNICEF bought 2.5 billion doses of vaccines for children in almost 100 countries last year, reaching nearly half of the world's children below the age of five.

World Immunization Week released the figures with which Unicef becomes the world's largest buyer of vaccines for children.

In the Philippines, the UN children's agency bought vaccines worth $33 million in the last two years.

Unicef also dedicated $1.5 million worth of technical aid and supplies to bolster immunization in urban poor and conflict areas to reach the poorest children.

The three remaining polio-endemic countries, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, each received more doses of vaccines than any other country, with nearly 450 million doses of vaccines procured to children in Nigeria, 395 million in Pakistan and over 150 million in Afghanistan.

Unicef is the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's lead procurement agency.

Access to immunization has led to a significant fall in deaths of children under five from vaccine-preventable diseases, and has brought the world closer to eliminating polio.
