Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) on last Thursday has accomplished the signing of an agreement for 45 double-deck coaches with CRRC Tangshan.

SEPTA will utilize these coaches with its new Siemens ACS-64 electric locomotives on Regional Rail services on the Northeast Corridor.

The Authority has awarded the contract to CRRC in response to the latters offer price of $US 137.5m for the base order of 11 driving cars plus 34 intermediate vehicles. The newly signed contract also includes an option for another 10 vehicles worth $US 23.5m.

CRRC is slated to start the deliveries of these cars from October 2019.

CRRC MAs new facility in Springfield (Massachusetts) will be used to assemble these stainless steel-bodied cars ordered by SEPTA.

SEPTA has disclosed that Regional Rail services, with the commissioning of the double-deck coaches, will have an additional seating capacity of about 6000 passengers.

Passenger traffic on Regional Rail services since the year 2000 has grown by 52%, added the Authority.
