Canada,France : ALSTOM wins C$529m in firm order from METROLINX to supply light rail vehicles

Publish Date : 16-May-2017

Order to provide 61 Citadis Spirit light rail vehicles (LRVs) to Metrolinx, the transport authority of the Greater Toronto & Hamilton Area.

The announcement on this deal has been made on Friday and it covers options for the supply of additional LRVs as well.

As part of the newly awarded firm order, Alstom will deliver 44 vehicles to be operated on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line, while the rest 17 is meant for the Finch West LRT project. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT line is slated to become operational in the year 2021.

Metrolinx in 2010 placed an order with Bombardier for LRVs, but the agency, over alleged delays in the production of this fleet and LRVs assigned for other projects, filed case against the company.

Metrolinx would allocate the 44 Alstom LRVs to the Hurontario LRT project provided that it receives the Bombardier fleet on time.

The CEO of Metrolinx John Jensen elucidated, We are going through a dispute resolution process with Bombardier, but that could take eight to 12 months, and we cant wait that long to determine whether Bombardier will be able to deliver.

Jensen added, We are hopeful that Bombardier can get its program on track. However, the steps we are taking give us a safety net if it turns out Bombardier is unable to fulfill its contract.

The Citadis Spirit, the fully low-floor 48m long LRVs, will be able to accommodate 321 people. Considering the chilly climatic conditions of Canada, these cars will be strengthened with added insulation and robust HVAC so that they can operate in temperatures of as low as -38C.

Now, Alstom, as part of a 2013 contract, is delivering 34 Citadis Spirit LRVs to be run on the Confederation Line of Ottawa.

On the Ottawa order, Jensen commented, We know for sure that Alstoms light rail vehicles work.

He summed up, Our end goal remains opening our LRT projects on time with high-quality vehicles that will provide excellent service to the people of this region. This new contract with Alstom provides flexibility to ensure that happens.
