Publish Date : 14-Jul-2017
The Bangladeshi government has inked a deal with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for a new local administration project aligned with the SDGs.
The UNDP said the $7.03 million project called Efficient and Accountable Local Governance (EALG) will run for the next 5 years to June 2022 and will be executed by the Local Government Division.
The project is being funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Denmark through the UNDP.
Additional Secretary to the Economic Relations Division Shamima Nargis and UNDP Country Director Kyoko Yokosuka inked the deal at the Planning Commission in Dhaka, on Tuesday.
Local Government Division (LGD), Saurendra Nath Chakrabhatty, Additional Secretary, also inked the deal, on behalf of the implementing agency.
The project has been signed after two flagship local government projects -Upazila Governance Project (UZGP) and Union Parishad Governance Project (UPGP) were implemented.
The UNDP said the new project, in line with the SDGs and 7th Five Year Plan of the government, aims to further strengthen planning and budgeting system at Upazila and Union Parishads with SDGs orientation and localization and pro-poor service-delivery mechanism,
The project will also help the government bolster downward accountability through effective and inclusive public engagement and will provide policy support to the government for establishing effective local governments.
