Australia: E-prescribing Tender Cancelled
Publish Date : 13-Jan-2010
Nine months after a tender aimed at resolving key management arrangements for new national electronic prescribing systems closed for consideration, the federal Health Department has quietly advised bidders by letter that the project has been canned. Department officials say the call for a consultancy to develop an e-prescribing and dispensing \"benefits realisation and implementation plan\" has been overtaken by recent events.
The NHHRC report signalled a loosening of bureaucratic reins, backing the National E-Health Strategy developed by Deloitte which advocates a \"middle-out approach\" for health IT projects. It also held out hope for a bigger role for local IT developers. With a 25c fee levied on the electronic transmission of each of some 240 million scripts annually from doctors\' desktops to community pharmacies, a new transaction business worth around $60 million a year has been created. The two main contenders are eRx Script Exchange, half-owned by the Pharmacy Guild, and MediSecure, which is endorsed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and backed by doctors.
E-prescribing networks also provide a platform for future health IT initiatives including individual health records and targeted programs such as better management of chronic illness, monitoring of medication compliance, and the provision of medicines data for research or public health purposes.
