Botswana‎: Another P17 Million Tender Scandal
Publish Date : 15-Jan-2010
Six employees of the Kweneng District Council (KDC) have been interdicted over allegations of corruption involving public funds estimated at P17 million. It is understood that the Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) is investigating the case. According to information passed to The Gazette four of the suspended employees are from the Department of Education under the local authority; one is from the Supplies Department and the sixth is from the Finance Department.
The allegations centre on the procurement of goods such as stationary and food. The DCEC camped at the CDC for most December and we understand they are still investigating the case, said a source. Another allegation is that the value of the tenders for stationery was altered. For instance they would double the figures. Say, a tender was worth P30m; it would be bloated to P60 million. Suspicion is that the suspects benefited financially from such illegal transactions.
