During this year, around 50 Indian railway stations will be revamped as the government plans an investment to the tune of Rs 7,500 crore towards their renovation.
Under the Railway Ministry's redevelopment project railway stations across the country will be renovated improving security as well as passenger flow management.
With Rs 7500 crore government investment, nearly 50 Indian railway stations will be revamped during this year. As per plans, the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) aims at giving an airport like facelift to the railway stations across the country. IRSDC is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by the government to design and develop new stations and redevelop existing Indian railway stations across India.
The Piyush Goyal led Railway Ministry will carry out redevelopment of the stations adding facilities like separate arrival and departure areas, improved security and passenger flow management. There will be separate arrival and departure areas. Existing systems will continue to function at railway stations which serves less crowd. On the basis of availability of space, the arrival and departure areas will be segregated, either by different levels or through partition at the same level.
Also, the passenger waiting area will be moved to concourses for passengers waiting to board the trains at railway platforms.
Initially, under this renovation and redevelopment project, IRSDC will mainly remain focussed on overhauling 50 railway stations through public-private partnership (PPP).
The stations shortlisted for renovation include Anand Vihar, Bijwasan, Chandigarh, Shivaji Nagar, Surat, Baiyyappananhalli, Nagpur, Gwalior, Amritsar, Gandhinagar (Jaipur), Sabarmati, Kanpur, Thakurli.
At present, the redevelopment work is being carried out at Habibganj and Gandhi Nagar (Gujarat) railway stations which will be the first state-of-the-art railway stations of Indian Railways with world class amenities like the ones at the airports.
