The Ministry of Municipality and the Environment offered technical tenders for agricultural investment projects, ten of which are for the production of vegetables in protected houses, and four for bids for the implementation of the establishment of four agricultural projects for the production of green fodder with treated sewage water.
As part of Qatar's efforts to create a significant productivity boom in the production of fresh vegetables in order to achieve the highest possible level of self-sufficiency, and based on the objectives and policies of the Technical Committee to stimulate and participate the private sector in economic development projects to activate and stimulate the private sector to contribute to food security projects in the country, 34 new strategic projects have been approved for the production of vegetables in stages, with an area of about 100,000 m2 per project. The first phase of these projects, which includes 10 projects for the production of vegetables in protected houses, The project has been offered by the technical bidding system only. This means that the best 10 candidates will be selected for the licenses of these projects for a period of 25 years and without a financial bid on the licenses of these projects.
Multiply agricultural production:
It is expected that the production of one project of fresh vegetables will reach about 2,100 tons with a total production of the ten projects of about 21,000 tons per year, which means that the projects involved contribute to increase the local production of vegetables by about 35%, and the production of strategic projects that will be put to production Vegetables in protected homes to 72 thousand tons annually, which would lead to a significant shift for the production of vegetables, where it is expected that the production of vegetables in Qatar through these strategic projects alone to about 132 thousand tons per year, which raises the proportion of Self-sufficiency Fresh vegetables to about 50%, it is also expected to increase this percentage to 65% in light of the ongoing expansions of existing farms and state support directed to these farms by the state represented by the Ministry of Blida and the environment.
Technical Plan for Implementation:
It is worth mentioning that the Ministry of Municipalities and Environment has put in place many technical controls for these projects. The most important of these is the provision of these fresh vegetables projects to the Qatari market throughout the year, and therefore the need to adopt modern technologies for refrigerated houses capable of producing high quality vegetables during the summer months, The project focuses mainly on the use of soilless farming technology, one of the most important global water-saving and productivity-enhancing technologies. This system provides about 70% of irrigation water for plants. And the reduction of labor requirements, as this agriculture does not need soil preparation as in traditional agriculture, in addition to increasing the productivity of the plant through the ability to improve the processes of nutrition, Irrigation and ventilation of roots.
Green Fodder:
On the other hand, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment in coordination with the Technical Committee to stimulate and participate the private sector in economic development projects in the Office of His Excellency the Prime Minister to offer technical tender to the private sector to submit bids for the implementation of the establishment of four agricultural projects for the production of green fodder with treated sewage water For the production of about 13,500 tons per year of green feed, with a production rate of 20 tons per year per hectare of green fodder, according to the terms and conditions contained in the bidding documents, so that the most appropriate tender of companies is selected from the technical and operational point of view. Increasing attention:

Development of greenhouses:
Despite the conditions of the unjust siege imposed on the State of Qatar, the vegetable production sector in the country has achieved a clear production boom during the period since the beginning of the siege until now. The sector has tended to intensify the use of modern technology in production represented by protected houses that promote productivity and water saving, The number of greenhouses in Qatari farms increased from 471 homes with a total area of about 497,000 m2 during the 2016/2017 season. The number of protected greenhouses in Qatari farms reached 919 protected houses with a total area of about 729,000 m2. In the period 2017/2018, an increase of about 47%, and the number of non-cooled houses in Qatari farms increased from about 3408 protected houses with a total area of about 2,000,0000 m2 during the 2016/2017 season, bringing the total number of protected houses in the farms to 4153 Protected house with a total area of about 2,200.
