Saudi Arabia: SAUDI ARAMCO approves TIHAMA power plant expansion

Publish Date : 25-Apr-2012

International Power plc has inked Energy Conversion Agreements (ECAs) with Saudi Oger for the expansion of their joint venture Tihama power plant in Saudi Arabia.

The expansion deal, which has received approval from the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), will include work at three of Tihama\'s four sites, and will be backed by long term ECAs until 2026.

Under the deal, 532MW of power output will be added at three sites, whereas the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work will be performed by Hyundai Heavy Industries and the gas turbines for the plant to be delivered by General Electric.

It is expected that the construction work will be commenced in May 2012, while the operations is scheduled to begin between late 2014 and mid 2015.

According to the Join venture partners, the expansion will be based on technology, which will boost output with a lower carbon footprint.

“The deal underscores our deep commitment to the realisation of private utility schemes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and regionally,” said Joseph Aboudiwan, Head of Saudi Oger\'s Utilities Division.
