Lithuania : The Seimas has ratified the agreement between Lithuania and Latvia on GMP services
Publish Date : 28-Mar-2019
The Seimas has ratified the Agreement on the Provision of Emergency Medical Services (GMP) at the Border Between Lithuania and Latvia, which adopted amendments to the law initiated by the Minister of Health Aurelija Veryga. This will ensure better and faster provision of GMP services to people living in the border area.
The agreement between Lithuania and Latvia was signed last October. It undertakes that Lithuanian or Latvian GMP stations will be able to provide services to people at the border of the neighboring country in case of disaster.
According to Minister Veryga, this has been a very long-term negotiation, with many talks and discussions, but has failed to reach a concrete agreement. I'm glad that we finally managed to pull this contract out into the daylight and blow down the dust on it.
"This is the first such agreement in the history of Lithuania with a neighboring country on the provision of emergency medical assistance, so we will be able to help save lives from now on, regardless of the state borders. Such co-operation between countries helps to build closer relations between states and to care for the people of both countries more quickly, said Minister Veryga.
According to him, sometimes the neighboring country's GMP can come to the patient and give help more quickly, so it is important to give the doctors the opportunity to provide assistance not only on their own territory, but also on the people at the border.
This agreement shall enter into force upon completion of internal procedures by the parties, ie ratification by the Seimas. Lithuanian and Latvian GMP stations can then contact each other and decide quickly how to provide emergency assistance to the border residents of both countries.
