Uruguay : The purchase process of a new mobile crane for public spaces in the port of Montevideo advances
Publish Date : 28-May-2019
The president of the National Ports Administration (ANP), Alberto Diaz, informed that two companies that do not have a presence in the port of Montevideo bid for the award of a crane in public spaces. The new equipment will be used to mainly deal with the transshipment of Paraguayan ships, said the official.
Diaz said that the crane is expected to be operational before the end of 2019. Its use will be specified in the public spaces of the port of Montevideo, including docks C and D, whose inauguration was announced by the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Vctor Rossi, for June 14.
It is a mobile multicargo crane similar to the one that operates in Fray Bentos that will allow to move containers, bulks and heavy merchandise. The equipment will be used to serve mainly the transshipments of the Paraguayan ships.
Daz indicated that the purchase process is advanced. In effect, two companies that do not have a presence in the capital port are those that submitted their bids in the bidding process. "In short, we will know if the process finished well or if it is necessary to start a new one," he said.
"The acquisition arises from the analysis that we were attending (in a deficient manner) to Paraguayan and cabotage vessels. The diagnosis was that the private operators do not put enough equipment to attend this business and that, to a certain extent, harms us, "explained the interviewee.
On the other hand, he recalled that the ANP canceled two cranes that were out of service, and those that are being scrapped. The new equipment is necessary due to the evolution of the market, although it would be convenient to have two, he said.
"We are not deciding to operate directly, what we are saying is that we are going to operate in the same way as we have been doing it (cranes managed by agency officials); and all our operators who rent their crane services know this, "he said.
