Peru : INEN implements alarm system for early detection of signs of clinical deterioration in hospitalized children

Publish Date : 29-May-2019

The National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases (INEN) implemented an alarm system for the detection and response to clinical deterioration in hospitalized children, through the application of an Early Warning Rating Scale (EVAT) that allows professionals of the health act early and / or refer in a timely manner to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

In this regard, the executive director of the Department of Pediatric Oncology of INEN, Dr. Juan Garca Len, said that patients hospitalized in this area are at high risk of clinical deterioration and mortality, so it is important to identify this state early that allows specialists to make timely interventions and avoid complications and even death.

"The scale of early warning assessment is a tool that assesses vital signs and physical examination, assign a score to then signal with green, yellow and red to the patient in order to identify any sign of deterioration in a timely manner" he said.

Since April 2017, our institute under the supervision of Dr. Rosdali Daz Coronado, assistant physician of the Department of Pediatric Oncology, begins the conformation of the team of EVAT leaders that includes nurses, pediatric oncologists and intensive care physicians, but it is in February this year in which a successful implementation was concluded, receiving the congratulations of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, having efficiently managed this system.

Currently, the institution is in a process of certification to be the fifth center of excellence in Latin America, since the results of the last evaluation in the month of May of this year were satisfactory, obtaining a 94% approval rating, presenting excellent results With this accreditation INEN will be able, in the future, to carry out trainings for the execution of the EVAT project to other hospitals in the country and in the region.

It should be noted that the scale has its beginnings at the Boston Children's Hospital in 2008, and then replicated in the Pediatric Oncology Unit (UNOP) of Guatemala in 2014, with good results: reduction of hospital stay, as well as savings of resources. This tool will then be taken under the mentorship of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to other services in Peru, Caribbean countries and South America.
