Singapore : Singapore looks to ink $542m defence deal

Singapore\'s F-15SG fighter jet pilots in Idaho will receive a US$435 million (S$542 million) boost, if a proposed investment goes through within a year.
The sale is of laser-guided bombs, vehicles and aerial refuelling services, among other things, to be used in the north-west American state by about 250 of the Republic of Singapore Air Force\'s (RSAF) pilots, weapon systems officers and ground crew for five years.
News of the sale broke when the US Department of Defence said on its website last Tuesday that the transaction would \'improve the security of a friendly country\' that has been \'an important force for economic progress\' in South-east Asia.
Naming Singapore as the recipient of the sale, the Pentagon\'s Defence Security Cooperation Agency, which oversees US weapon system sales abroad, said also that the training programme would help the RSAF groom \'mission-ready and experienced pilots\' and improve professional ties with its US counterparts.
