Portugal : Alcantara Container Terminal concession renewal guarantees investment of 122 million euros

Publish Date : 17-Jul-2019

The Port of Lisbon Administration (APL) and Liscont (Yilport Group) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the consensus reached in the Renegotiation Process of the Alcantara Container Terminal Concession Contract. The agreement reached now includes a concession until 2038 and a 122 million (100% private) investment plan at Alcantara Container Terminal, divided between infrastructure interventions (26.5 million), acquisition and implementation of technological infrastructure ( 2 million) and acquisition and installation of equipment (93.5 million).

The major share of the investment will be made over the next two years (between 2020 and 2021), during which time the 44.1 million euros will be invested in the Container Terminal of Alcantara, particularly the acquisition of two new porticos and six new porticos park portals, in addition to investments directed to training, security and certification of operations.

The large investment of 122 million euros will ensure not only the modernization of the Container Terminal of Alcntara but also a strong reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in its operation, not only through the modal transfer rail and river modes), but also due to the acquisition of new and more efficient equipment, allowing a greater flow of operations and a positive interaction with the surrounding city where the terminal is inserted. The Alcntara Container Terminal, operated by the Yilport Group, is a fundamental infrastructure of the Port of Lisbon, currently handling more than 40% of the total containerized cargo handled in the port of the capital.

Step in strategy to increase port competitiveness
The agreement reached between APL and Yilport Liscont marks one of the fundamental points of the Strategy for the Competitiveness Enhancement of the Continent's Commercial Port Network - Horizon 2026, in which the Minister of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, attached great importance to modernization of the Container Terminal of Alcntara, vital for its affirmation as a port terminal of reference in a sector of highly competitive activity as is the containerized cargo market.

It should be recalled that this renegotiation, which has now come to fruition, took place in the framework of the work of the Committee for the Renegotiation of Port Terminal Concession Contracts for the Provision of the Public Cargo Handling Service for the Port of Lisbon (Negotiation Committee), based on a proposal submitted by the concessionaire.
